Getting Around Montreal

Montreal's public transit backbone is the STM (Société de transport de Montréal), which operates a clean, efficient metro system across four colour-coded lines, Orange, Green, Blue, and Yellow, covering the island's major neighbourhoods and connecting to suburban rail. The metro is the fastest way to navigate downtown, the Plateau, and Old Montreal. Pick up an OPUS card at any metro station. It works across metro, bus, and regional rail, and avoids the friction of buying single-use tickets. One honest caution: the metro doesn't reach every corner of the island, so bus connections are often necessary for residential areas, budget extra time for those legs. For first-time visitors, the Orange Line is the workhorse: it loops through downtown, connects major interchange stations, and links to the main train station (Gare Centrale). The STM mobile app shows real-time departures and trip planning, and is far more reliable than Google Maps for bus timing. Cycling is excellent in summer via the BIXI bike-share network, with dedicated lanes throughout the central neighbourhoods, a better option than a taxi for short cross-Plateau trips when weather permits. From Montréal-Trudeau International Airport (YUL), the 747 express bus runs directly downtown throughout the day and into the night, making it a solid economy option. The newer REM light rail also now connects the airport to downtown with fast, frequent service, check current schedules via the REM website, as this is the quickest and most comfortable option. Taxis and rideshares are available at the terminal for a comfort-tier alternative. Check current rates in the booking widget below. What to skip: don't rent a car for a city-only stay, downtown parking is expensive and the metro handles most needs efficiently.

Quick Transportation Tips

Load an OPUS card at any STM metro station to tap on and off buses and metro seamlessly, no need for exact change or single-ride tickets.

The REM light rail connects YUL (Trudeau Airport) directly to downtown's Gare Centrale at a fraction of a taxi fare.

Use the underground city (RÉSO) in winter, it links major downtown metro stations to hotels, malls, and offices so you can walk blocks without stepping outside.

Bixi bike-share runs spring through fall. The Bixi app shows live dock availability across hundreds of stations so you can plan pick-up and drop-off before leaving.
